ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Unrest in India's dressing room before Champions Trophy! A cricketer has a disagreement with Gambhir.
The Champions Trophy kicks off on Wednesday, and India is set to face Bangladesh in their first match on Thursday. However, there seems to be some tension brewing in the Indian dressing room. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant is reportedly unhappy with coach Gautam Gambhir's decisions regarding the team lineup. This tournament marks the first ICC trophy India is competing in under Gambhir's leadership.
India has brought two wicketkeepers to the tournament: Lokesh Rahul and Rishabh Pant. In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, India played three one-day matches against England, where Rahul had a rough start, failing to score in the first two games but managing to get 40 runs in the third. Before the tournament began, Gambhir made it clear that Rahul is his first-choice wicketkeeper. If for any reason Rahul can't play, Pant will step in. Despite Pant's impressive recovery from a car accident that sidelined him for a while, he hasn't had many opportunities in the one-day format, having played just one match. It seems unlikely that he will get a chance during the Champions Trophy either. If Rahul continues to play, Pant may find himself on the bench for the entire tournament.
Sources suggest that Pant is struggling to accept Gambhir's decision. He feels frustrated about not being given a fair shot to prove himself. He believes that if he had been given a few matches and didn't perform, he could accept being left out. Instead, he feels sidelined without a chance to showcase his skills, especially when Rahul, despite his struggles, has been given more opportunities. Pant has even discussed his concerns with some teammates, highlighting the growing unrest in the team.
