Diabetes can rob you of your eyesight! The number of people affected is increasing in the country, researchers warn

The organ most affected by diabetes is the eyes. Many people will be shocked to hear that uncontrolled diabetes can lead to vision loss.

Panic sets in as soon as diabetes is diagnosed. It seems like a lot of things have been cut out of your life in an instant. Especially those who love to eat have more problems. Doctors will tell you what you can eat and what you can't. Apart from that, diabetes doesn't come alone, it comes with various other physical problems. It damages the heart, liver, and kidneys. And the organ that is most damaged is the eyes. Many people will be shocked to hear that uncontrolled diabetes can even lead to vision loss. Many people in India have been affected by diseases like vision loss due to diabetes. And this number is increasing.

In a study conducted since 2022, researchers have claimed that diabetes can cause blurred vision or even loss of vision. A research paper on this subject has been published in the medical journal 'The Lancet'. Researchers said that out of at least 8,000 diabetic patients in India, 12.5 percent suffer from vision problems. Many have damage to the retina. Of these, at least 4 percent are in a critical condition.

When the retina is damaged due to diabetes, it is called 'diabetic retinopathy' in medical terms. The retina is the most sensitive screen of the eye. Light rays enter the eye and are reflected by the retina, creating visibility. Due to anemia or lack of oxygen, the fine blood vessels of the retina become blocked. Sometimes, water or oil-like substances accumulate in the blood vessels, forming a swollen area. Blood clots there, causing irritation in the eye, and sometimes holes form in the blood vessels and blood leaks out. As a result, light rays are prevented from entering the eye. Vision gradually becomes blurred. All these problems can occur due to diabetes.

The problem starts with eye pain. There is difficulty in seeing not only distant objects, but also near objects. There is also difficulty in seeing both sides of the scene at times. The patient cannot distinguish colors, suddenly seeing darkness all around, not being able to see a specific part, and seeing sudden flashes of light - all these are also symptoms of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetics should consult a doctor immediately if they experience such problems in their eyes. In this case, doctors diagnose the disease through angiography, eye scan. Laser therapy, eye injections or steroid injections are also used to try to restore vision to its previous state. If you get your eyes checked every six months, the risk of danger will be much less.
