60 processions in Kolkata on Ram Navami, administration ready to prevent planned unrest, 29 IPS officers to remain in charge in the state
Ram Navami is next Sunday. On that occasion, 3,500 to 4,000 police personnel are being kept in charge of security in Kolkata. And on that day, 29 IPS officers will be on special duty across the state. According to police sources, officers of the rank of DC, Joint Director of Police and others will be present in the old and big procession in the heart of the city. Apart from that, the responsibilities are being divided among the police officers including OC, DC, AC, Joint CP. There will be police picketing on every road where the procession will go. Surveillance is being arranged through drones, CCTV and videography.
In fact, just as the BJP has a procession on the occasion of Ram Navami, various Hindutva organizations have called for processions. Again, the Trinamool is also taking to the streets on Ram Navami. Not only Kolkata, the state's ruling party will also take out processions in areas where Hindi-speaking people live in large numbers, such as Asansol and Siliguri. Trinamool councilors are distributing leaflets from house to house in Jalpaiguri again, inviting people to take part in the Ram Navami procession. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma has said that if people walk on the city streets with weapons during the Ram Navami procession, the police will take legal action. However, the Chief Minister has said that processions can be held according to the 'system'. According to Kolkata Police sources, their quick response team will be ready on that day. Senior officers will be present at five or six places where large processions are held, including Hastings, Entali, and Kashipur. There will be a system of patrolling on bikes. At the same time, police personnel will accompany the procession. In fact, Kolkata Police is determined to prevent any isolated incidents and unrest on the day of Ram Navami. Police Commissioner Verma will hold a meeting with officers at Lalbazar at 12 noon on Saturday to discuss the matter.
According to a police source, last year, around 60 processions were held in Kolkata on Ram Navami. This time too, the number is expected to remain the same. And 29 IPS officers of the police have been given special duty since Saturday in various places including Howrah, Hooghly, Barrackpore, Malda, Murshidabad, Siliguri. They will be on that duty till next Monday.
It is worth noting that, regarding the procession on Ram Navami, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said, "Punjabis also take kirpan. You can definitely do it according to the system." Police Minister Mamata added, "Many of us also take processions on Ram Navami. I have no objection to that. We want it to be peaceful (procession)."
